Houstonia Magazine – Red Bull’s Breakdancing Competition Headed to Houston

FOUNDER OMAR DAVILLA INTERVIEW

THERE ARE FOUR CORE ELEMENTS of hip-hop, and Red Bull is bringing one of them to H-Town.

On Saturday, August 14, the Red Bull BC One breakdancing competition will be stopping in Houston for a day of hip-hop, dance, and fun.

The Red Bull BC One Competition is one of the most prestigious one-on-one breaking competition in the world. The show travels the country to different locations to host “cyphers,” where local dancers will go head-to-head in front of a panel of esteemed judges. After the cypher rounds, 16 “B-Boys” and “B-Girls” earn the right to battle it out at the Red Bull BC World Final, where one winner is crowned annually.

Later this month, the competition will be hosting its Houston cypher at Warehouse Live. Renowned judges such as Red Bull BC One All-Star and b-boy Roxrite, Naty Lite, first-ever Red Bull BC One World Champion and Austin native B-Boy Omar and Houston native B-Boy Marley will judge the talent and determine the winner. The event will be hosted by Yung Chris, a hometown native and an active member of Havikoro, will provide the soundtrack for the event.

Omar Davila (B-Boy Omar) was the first winner of the Red Bull BC One, back in 2004. Now, he sits on the other side of the stage.

“It’s something that I take seriously because I was that competitor,” Davila tells Houstonia. “I competed in local, state-wide, national, and international competitions, and so I know the glory of winning as well as the agony of defeat. I use all of my experience in these events to be fair and to be honest with the dancers.”

Red Bull will also be screening the Texas native’s short film, Hope 4 Hip Hop, which tells the story of how being the 2004 Red Bull BC One Champion changed the trajectory of his career and led to his community outreach programs and mentorship, galvanizing the next generation of Texas breakers and Olympic hopefuls.
